December 2023 Challenge: Happy HOLIDAYS

Welcome to the SRTT Lou Happy Holidays December monthly challenge!

December is a busy, cold, dark month so we are hoping this fun challenge will help with accountability and be a fun way to reflect on 2023, as well as look forward to 2024!
The theme is “Happy Holidays” and here are the rules:
📷 Each letter in the words “HAPPY HOLIDAYS” represents a mini-challenge below!
📷 You MUST work through the mini-challenges IN ORDER! This means your first challenge will be the “H” in “happy” followed by the “A”, etc, etc. Your goal is to complete the whole challenge (all the letters) by the end of the month!
📷 Lastly, post as you complete a letter and have fun with it! We all love pictures and creative/fun ones even more!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS Challenge
H: HIGH FIVE - Give a virtual high-five/shout-out on the group page to another SRTT member.
A: ALONE - Actively soak up some alone time during your workout (and post about it after)
P: PAL - Run/walk with a pal (in-person or virtual) - Tour De Ville and other group run events are a perfect opportunity for this one.
P: PROTEIN - We all know protein is important so be sure to get in your protein and share with the group.
Y: YOU DECIDE - Post something noteworthy about your workout (why it was a good workout, something you realized or thought about, etc), or decide what color you want to wear…totally up to you what you want to do/share for this one.
H: HEAD TO TOE - Complete a total body workout and post about it.
O: ONWARD - What is/are your fitness goals for 2024? Share one or all in the group.
L: LOOP - Run/walk a route that involves more than 1 loop. Seneca Park is a great place for this.
I: INSIDE - Complete a workout inside.
D: DECORATIONS - Pass by some holiday decorations during your run. Snap a pic and share after.
A: APPRECIATE - Post 1 thing related to running/fitness that you were appreciative of in 2023.
Y: YOURSELF - While exercising, think about your proudest accomplishment this year. Share it (and your workout) with the group.
S - STRETCH - Most of us wish we prioritized it better. Take some time to do a purposeful full body stretch!
And as always, feel free to share any December goals you might have! Have fun!
May be a graphic of christmas tree and text

October 2023 Challenge

Welcome to the Halloween Hustle October monthly challenge! It will run from Oct 1 - 31.

Our scavenger hunt is always really popular and a ton of fun! This month we are mixing it up a little and hustling to get some activity in and find a few things along the way for each letter of the alphabet. You can mark off ONE PER DAY.
Orange text will be something you might see on your walk/run/bike or maybe eat in the month of October. Green text will be activities to keep you moving along during the month. As you come across one or complete one, mark it off and share in the group!
If scavenger hunts aren’t your thing, be sure to share your monthly goal(s) with us and post throughout the month for accountability.
Let’s get our Halloween Hustle on!

Member Spotlight on Mary J.

Check out this fun spotlight on Mary J.

Hometown:  Louisville, KY

How long have you been a member of SRTT? Why did you join? Joined the group on 5/29/2023 to find other ladies to run with that wouldn't mind that I am a bit slow. I really enjoy the posts and the inspiring ladies in this group. I attended my first Alpha run on 7/15/2023 and made a couple of new friends. SRTT is an awesome community of badass women!

Why do you Run? Running is part 3 of my fitness journey that started when I turned 50. Part 1 was losing over 100 lbs and restoring my health. Part 2 was finding a gym and trainers to help me become stronger and maintain my weight loss. I started running in the fall, 2023 to prepare for a Hyrox relay competition in Chicago with some amazing athletes from my gym. I kept running because I wanted to improve my endurance and heart health while also enjoying the camaraderie with running/gym friends. I love how many inspiring people I have met along this journey and how running specifically has improved my fitness level.

Favorite non-running workout: HIIT workouts at Elevate Fitness 502

What is the one thing you absolutely need to run? Shoes (lots of shoes) that fit well in fun colors!

What is your favorite post-run indulgence? Ice cream

What was your favorite race and why? 2022 Hungry Turkey 5k. It was hard. It was my first running 5k EVER and I surprised myself with the sense of accomplishment of completing it with a respectable time. The race boosted my confidence in doing physically hard things. It nearly quieted my middle school gym teacher's voice telling me I was fat and lazy.

What is your bucket list race? Triple Crown 15k

Do you call yourself a runner? If so, at what point in your journey did that happen?  I haven't arrived at that point yet. I am still riding the Struggle Bus!

What is your favorite thing about being an SRTT member? Making new badass women friends

What have you struggled with during your running journey and did you find a solution? I continue struggling with running past 1 mile without taking walk breaks. My HR rises to the max zone pretty quickly if I am running much faster than 5 mph. I aspire to find the zone at which I can run 5-6 miles with minimal breaks.

What three things do you most want to accomplish (running or non-running related)? I want to age gracefully, help other women reach their potential professionally, and be an inspiration to other people who might need a boost to start their own health and fitness journey.

3 September Monthly Challenges are Now Available!

 September challenges are now available!

September monthly challenges are ready to go!

This month there are 3 challenges to choose from: The STEPtember Challenge, the Zooma Back to School Challenge and the Team Challenge.

The STEPtember Challenge is great because it works for people of all abilities and goals. Each member sets a goal either daily or for the month and shares it in the group. Then their daily posts reflect their progress!
For example: You could set a goal of at least 8,000 steps a day every day and your update would be "Day 6/30 for 8,000 steps a day...I made it happen today with a dog walk and a zillion loads of laundry brought upstairs!"
OR
You set a goal of 300,000 steps for the month. Your update could look like "28,000 of 300,000 for the month! Took it easy with just 6,000 today resting up for my half marathon tomorrow!"

ZOOMA has a Back to School Challenge happening! This was a pre-registration event. "The ZOOMA Back to School Challenge is designed to help you finish the summer season on a strong note and prep you for fall running. We’ll do weekly, alphabet-inspired strength/agility workouts to help you run strong and injury free."

The Team Challenge is back! This is a Louisville Chapter Favorite. This challenge puts members together in teams of 12-14 ladies. The goal is to support and encourage one another to meet monthly goals (and make some new friends along the way)! Pre-registration is required and now closed.

Member Spotlight on Niki

Check out this fun spotlight on Niki W.

Hometown:  Originally Orlando, now I consider Louisville home.

How long have you been a member of SRTT? Why did you join? I have been a member since 2017 and joined because I had just started running and was new to Ky and was hoping to meet some people to run with and find places to run.

Why do you Run? I run for so many reasons. The health benefits, the joy of it, the empowerment it gives me when I have accomplished a new goal, the mental aspect that helps me clear my mind and because I have learned so much about myself thru the process of becoming a runner.

Favorite non-running workout: Hot yoga

What is the one thing you absolutely need to run? Music

What is your favorite post-run indulgence? Starbucks coffee and a blueberry muffin

What was your favorite race and why? I would have to say Chicago Marathon by far. It was an amazing experience and loved every minute of it!

What is your bucket list race? Bourbon Chase, Ragnar, Great Smoky 1/2

Do you call yourself a runner? If so, at what point in your journey did that happen?  I do call myself a runner! I want to say I considered myself a runner when I completed the 10 miler of the Triple Crown in 2017. That was an emotional feeling of accomplishment when I crossed the finish line.

What is your favorite thing about being an SRTT member?  Community, encouragement and the FOMO it creates (in a good way). It has allowed me to meet so many wonderful people and experience races I may have never done before.

What have you struggled with during your running journey and did you find a solution?  I struggled when I had surgery and was unable to rain Chicago in 2021. I was so upset and defeated. It too a long time for me to get out of that bad mental space and get back into running. I started back running solo just to allow myself time and Grace to get back to what I loved and allow me time to embrace the suck of starting over. Once I felt confident enough to run with others I joined runs and just took it one run at a time to get my groove back.

What three things do you most want to accomplish (running or non-running related)?

I want to become yoga teacher certified

In 2024 run only races I have never run before

Complete an Olympic triathlon

Check out this fun spotlight on Krista R.

Hometown: Louisville, KY

How long have you been a member of SRTT? Why did you join?

Since late 2017. I was added by Lori after we were signed up for Disney Princess Half in 2018.

Why do you run?

Because I can, to get outdoors and to prove to myself that I can do hard things.

Favorite non-running workout:

Lifting!

What is the one thing you absolutely need to run?

Sunglasses if I have to pick just 1. I can't see without them

What is your favorite post-run indulgence?

I don't know if I have one. Usually depends on how I feel and how much time I have :)

What was your favorite race and why?

Dallas BMW Half Marathon. Great crowd support, generally great temps and it's my PR half!

What is your bucket list race?

I don't know that I've thought about bucket list races but was interested in maybe the Glacier Half Marathon. Right now, it feels impossible though.

Do you call yourself a runner? If so, at what point in your journey did that happen?

Yes - but it took me a LONG time to feel like I could say that since I can't run without intervals. I don't remember exactly when it happened but this group helped me get to that mindset.

What is your favorite thing about being an SRTT member?

The support and friendships I've made.

What have you struggled with during your running journey and did you find a solution?

oh man - I think comparison is one big thing I've struggled with. I haven't found a solution yet but I am working on realizing that I run for me and to prove to myself that I can because it's hard for me. It doesn't matter how fast I am or if I can't run as long as someone else, as long as I am getting out there and doing something I didn't think possible.

The other things I've struggled with are shin splints, PF at times and just being heavier and therefore slower and not able to run as long. Getting into a rhythm with my pace and breathing.

What three things do you most want to accomplish (running or non-running related)?

#1 - Do pushups on my toes. I've been working towards this since June of last year and after some shoulder issues, I had to take a break for a bit/haven't been consistent but went to PT and continuing the exercises provided and getting back to it now. I was SO close before my shoulder issue.

#2 - Be able to complete another half marathon. Getting older and I gained A LOT of weight during covid (thanks to hormones) so starting over with running and it feels impossible.

#3 - Continue to grow. learn and do things out of my comfort zone.
